Mind vs. Matter

I am starting feel like there is a real disconnect between my intellectual understanding of sociological concepts and how they apply to my day to day life. Sometimes I think I am theorizing from a place that is too abstract and I miss important corporeal details. Do you ever feel like cerebral concepts get in the way of your practical social understanding? How do you apply sociological concepts to your life in a practical sense?

  2. i was just watching Bill Maher on O'Reilly (turned it off then bc O'Reilly can be hard to take), and Maher might as well have used Weber. Remember how Weber says there are 3 ways we make decisions: tradition, rationality, and charisma? Maher indicated a bit of disappointment in Obama because he had hoped we were at a more transformational point in our history but that he found the President to be operating in a more bureaucratic fashion and he admired his calm manner. I thought that was an interesting comment on charisma v. rationality. (he didn't use the term charisma, but that is what he meant).
