Corn is part of the reason why we are overweight

Last quarter I had a professor who told me "Corn is the cause of obesity" I did not believe her so I asked "why". She told me to look at the products I consumed and read what ingredients it contains. She told me more than half of them will have corn syrup. I went on to watch a few documentaries that emphasized the fact that this starch was the reason for our growing obesity population. I asked my mom what do cows eat . . she said "grass" . . I told her guess what American cows eat? . . CORN!! . . Many of the animals that we consume are feed CORN . . Next time you make dinner stop and look at the ingredients in the box and you will be amazed at the weird hard to pronounce ingredients that make up our food sources . . and am pretty sure CORN Syrup will be one of the first ingredient.

  3. I have to admit: when I gain weight and talk with myself honestly, I have to admit I have been eating too much icecream and chocolate, tacos, chips, and bread - and not exercising. When I cut out white flour - and cut back on other white carbs and start going to the gym, I lose weight. It does not come off right away - but after six weeks of steady exercise, I begin to see it. I begin to "eat" and feel satisfied when I hear my stomach growl! Funny how things turn around.
And, yes, you must not eat processed foods with corn syrup in them.

  4. The theme of my English 102 course was "Food" and we read articles and watched documentaries which focused on this very subject. All of the added hormones and genetically modified vegetables are causing so much harm to our bodies and we have become addicted to them. And cows are not supposed to eat corn. I'm not sure if one of the films you watched was Food Inc. but there is a segment in that about cows eating corn and that being the cause of the E. coli virus. Yet, no one pays attention to things like that. The food industry simply wants to make more food for less money to make a profit without thinking about the danger they are putting the consumers in.

It's really hard to change eating habits and eat things which have not been tampered with by science because of the cost of healthy foods. I try to shop at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods as often as I can but it can be pretty pricey.

Of course, those who run the food companies can afford to shop for healthier food choices because they've saved an extra buck by sending us to an early grave...

  5. Happy2Bme . . yes the film was food inc. It is such an eye opener. Now days it is so hard to avoid all the processed food and even the ones you think are healthy can turn around and be the most unhealthy dinners.

My grandparents are not fat and don't have weight problems and they don't even exercise. They live back in Mexico and they raise their own chickens and live in a small town so they do a lot of walking. Their way of living makes me want to move out there.

MT . . How do you arrange your schedule . . I might need pointers to integrate exercise in my routine.

  9. @Ale_321:

Many times I daydream about moving out of this city or out of this country altogether. I too would like to give the slow pace life a try at least once in my life and who knows I may even like it. I would grown my own food so that I knew exactly what was in it. Make my fresh orange juice every morning. Pick out an avocado from my garden. What a life.

Sigh... one day, hopefully soon I will live the way I want to.

  11. Ale_321. Every quarter, I write out a table with Sunday through Saturday on it. Then I put on commute time, class time, office hours, paper reading time. Then I can stick on what time I better be in bed and what time I have to get up. Then I can split up the remaining time with fun and exercise. So as the days pass, the calendars (which are in bathroom and kitchen) stare at me and remind me that I DO have the time.

about the still thin grandparents in Mexico, above. In the PM class I showed a nice video from some anthropologists who found groups with the longest healthy lives. thos people didn't do "exercise" per se. They lived lives where they had to walk, reach, clean, bend over, do this and that - and all those movements kept them supple. Too many of us are sedentary.
