If Steve Jobs gave the State of the Union address

Christopher Beam and Josh Levin of Slate imagine Steve Jobs giving the State of the Union address:

Thank you for coming. And thank you to President Obama for asking me to deliver this year's speech. We're going to make some history today.
You know, it was just a year ago that we announced our economic plan for 2009. We said we were going to turn around the recession. We said we'd create jobs. And we said we'd do it in 12 months. What happened? We did it in three. It was the most successful period in the history of the United States. And 2010 is only going to be better. How awesome is that?

(APPLAUSE.)

How did we do it? Simple. We made a stimulus package. It had the most features of any package we've ever created—more jobs, more money, more everything. We could have stopped there. We could've said, Hey, that was great. Let's go do something else. But you know what? It wasn't enough. The American people deserve something even better and more revolutionary.

Procrastination - again

Well, it's the time of class and I have not done anything with regard to my paper that is due next week. I was hoping to have a rough draft done by tonight. I guess the feeling that I have is that either I'm not going to do a good job and/or the task is going to be too difficult. Well, the important thing is to get it done, and to learn something about writing, and my unique writing characteristics, such as why I don't like to write, and/or why I procrastinate. It's funny, Monday I said to myself that I can at least come on to this web site and blog about something, instead of waiting until the last day. However, here it is Thursday, and I'm just now blogging. Well, at least I did it.

The Weather

I have been enjoying the weather all day. Where I work I can see the snow on the mountains. What a view! It is so relaxing and calming. So enjoy it because rain is coming our way! :(

R.I.P. Howard Zinn

Howard Zinn was the author of the world-acclaimed A People's History Of The United States, a professor, a participant in the American Civil Rights Movement, and a giant of Political Science. A Peoples History blew the top off of a lot of things that weren't taught to us in school about the history of this country, and gave people a lot of dark information about the negative and tragic aspects of many things this country was built on: violence, imperialism, abuse of power, slavery, oppression and economic, class and race imbalances. The best part about this text was that it was comprised of many first hand accounts and stories from people that had never had their voices heard before. This book has come to be used as an alternative to textbooks in universities and classrooms around the world. Zinn also taught, for a time, at Spellman College, a Black University.

No right way to write

I have never had a strict way of writing papers. I don't follow a methodical formula, and - so far in my educational career - it seems to have worked for me. However, this quarter I'm taking a course in which the professor wants the paper written following a strict formula... and I do mean that every step of the process has to be turned in individually. It's cramping my style!!!

I can see how his formula could work for some people, so I'm not criticizing it. Furthermore, I know he's trying to help. However, I think I've come to the realization that there is no right way to write, and that the same product can emerge from many different processes.

Now that I've decided that there is no right way to write (and thus, there can be no criticism), I'm interested to know: how do you tackle the writing process? Are you formulaic, or all over the place like me? Has that process changed much over time, or have you stuck to your ways?

Quote of the Day

"In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different."
Coco Chanel

I came across this quote and thought it would be great to share. I love to start the day with a quote. It is food for thought. It makes me think about things and my life. It gets my mind going and thinking. I hope everyone is having a great day!!! Beware of the rain that is coming.

Zing!

As I was walking to the libary for class, a heavy set girl came up to me and said "Its call Proactive." Without thinking I responsed with "Its called Nutrisystem!" The face she made was priceless. =]

journal found

Found a journal i was writing in the 5th grade. So hiloarious the problems I thought I had then. Or who i liked and what I was thinking. It was so interesting to see how my mind worked then and how it does now. Obviously it's going to be much different, but when you sit back and really think about it, the human brain is so amazing. How it develops over time. Just amazing

Compromise is a lot like installing a golden toilet; its simple in theory yet difficult in practice

Paper 2: C and C

Notes are more clear for paper #2: C&C.  Check it out.  Day people have it due tomorrow. Night people presumably got it to the envelope at my office door.  I will be picking Night Papers up tomorrow at 12:30.

Sunday Morning. 10:45 am

I've been visiting this blog on a semi daily basis wanting to contribute my own but with no success. Every time I attempt to post, my mind goes blank and I throw my hands in the air with the whole thing. (Not really in the air, that would be weird) This morning is no different. So instead of trying to write something insightful, I decided to  write about what I've learned this weekend.
1) Looking back, eating Del Taco at 2:oo in the morning wasn't as good of an idea as it seemed at 1:30 in the morning.
2) Despite every ones protest at first, buying the french fry maker was an awesome idea. Great Fries! Everyone loved them!
3) My dog doesn't like her ear medication. Surprise, Surprise.
4) Finally, I feel bad that I never really watched Conan for the past 7 months. After I saw his last show, his highlights from the past 7 months looked really funny. How many of you say the same thing. If we were watching, they wouldn't have fired him. Don't blame Leno.

Paper# 3:

Is Paper # 3 due this Thursday or is it being postponed until the following week? Is this what the "In Good Hands" post is referencing?

WRI Monday

Remember:  go directly to the Library, not the classroom

Paper #2

I wish that I would have come to class on Wednesday. I have no idea what I am going to write my paper on and I want to get it done now but cant. Oh the Joy!

Thursday, January 21

catching up

well - sorry I am sick, but could not be helped.  I'm sure you got some tips on doing research and collected a few articles.  I'll tell you what to do with them next week and we will go over ASA formatting.  Meantime, you could start thinking about your observation setting and maybe even go!  you can also now easily research something about your observation site and find a reference or two about the type of setting that it is.  Keep you eye on the blog.

just to make sure.

i attended the class for the library, and i just wanted to make sure if we only need five articles for next meeting. what other sources do we need for next meeting.

good hands

oh - now you know.  i'm home in bed.  you're in good hands.  do your work and I'm postponing the next paper by a week - so no worries.  we'll talk much more next week about how to write this paper and papers in general.

I have comments on all your papers.  I'll be in my office monday - if you really want to pick up your paper, email me mtabor [at] calstatela. edu subject line WRI Paper Pick up Name.  Then I'll put it in the "bin" in the Soc office under the initial of your last name.

At the library . . .

I'm at the library now, and the room we meet in at 6:10 p.m. is in the back of the reference desk on the main floor. It's the room where there are a lot of computers and huge glass windows to see inside and outside of.

Question: What is "better": "They are strong courageous fighting women"; or, "They are strong, courageous, fighting women."

Rain: On one hand we need the rain for water to drink and to water our crops; on the other hand, it causes an interruption in our nice Califoria weather which we're all used to, as well as flooding (if there's too much), mudslides, and makes driving more hazardous.

so nice

It's so nice to get everything that you need to do done :c)

Hmm..

So life is very interesting. I'm really not a pestimistic person. I'm usually pretty optimistic. However, it is crazy what everyone has to deal with now a days. I know everyone here as their own personal issues that have to keep an eye on plus working and going to school. kudos to everyone here :c)

sometimes

I feel like getting away from it all.. like Ralph Waldo..or Buddah..or maybe even like a doubtful crab retreating into the safety of its shell.
Yet I find that in the uncertainty of the chaotic world... I can still find some peace and simple moments that inspire deep reflection and gratefulness

Does anyone share these feelings? and what helps you soothe the chaos? what brings you back to the center?

And with these words I end my night.. see you all tommorow!

Dear Writer's Block,

I hate you.
Sincerely,
a very tired student.

I was waiting to come up with something amazing to share with you all as my first post(well first one on this blog.) But my frustration with another class is overwhelming at this point, that I just needed to vent. So this is me, venting...
Now, to get back to work on that paper!

office hours Wednesday

tomorrow, Wednesday - no office hours over in King Hall.  Just 15 min prior to class in classroom.  After class ok, too - but no King Hall office hours.

While we're on the subject of hoarders and recluses...

Two of my favorites are Little Edie and Big Edie of "Grey Gardens":

Hoarders

I'm officially obsessed with "Hoarders", a new show on A&E. Has anyone else seen it? It's all about people who have a compulsive desire to, well, hoard nearly every tangible object that comes into their lives - their possessions take precedence over everything, including their families. It definitely makes me think about conflict and consensus...many of the people on this show appear, on the surface, to be perfectly well-adjusted, but their lives are in complete disarray. They're functional members of society (consensus), but their private life is completely untenable (conflict). It's fascinating. If you're as morbidly curious as I am about this phenomenon, I recommend picking up Helen Worden Erskine's "Out of This World" - it's about hoarders in NYC in the early 20th century. Most of the book's subjects are hermits, though, which removes the consensus piece of the equation, but it's engaging nonetheless. The LA public library has a few copies.

Drugs in Amsterdam

Last night I watched a documentary on drugs in Amsterdam. It was extremely interesting. Because they have considered marijuana as a "soft drug" you are allowed to go into a coffee shop and purchase a small amount of marijuana legally. Due to this, Amsterdam does not have the same issues as we do here in America with "hard drugs" such as: cocaine, meth, and heroine addictions. Extremely interesting documentary :c)

Gossip Blogs

So, I love love love gossip blogs. BUT I hate when the bloggers bash people and attack peoples sexuality or choice upon accusation and not fact. I mean come on your just so lonely and inquisitive enough to dig up information on these celebrities. All I ask is that you keep your opinions to yourself and base your information from pure fact and not from ur opinion of the accusation. So **cough cough** Sandrarose.com I hate your gossip blog your a complete looser and you copy and repost the same stories as necolebitche.com. So what I'm saying everyone is check out necolebitchie.com, its good stuff!

Conflict, Consensus

I'm reading the book called Truman, about Harry Truman, former US Pres.  He was a captain of a US battery in WWI; there he discovered leadership.  It's interesting how war, the biggest conflict of all, depends upon such consensus and functioning among the men in the batteries.  Gangs, too:  the most conflictful of groups, yet run on consensus to one great leader.  And what is on the opposite side of the continuum?  Look at love and marriage:  supposedly the highest form of consensus - and, yet, look at the conflict therein.   Post comments here about solutions, problems, with Paper #2.

Paper # 2

I don't know how to get started on paper #2. I don't know what will work with the whole conflict and consensus thing. I'm stuck!!

Restless and thinking about Patience

How can a society that exists on instant coffee, frozen microwaveable dinners, fast food, and instant pictures- teach patience to its young?

I'm posting this because, I saw a mother throw a tantrum at my work because, a co-worker in her words "wasn't fast enough," getting a shoe she wanted. At the same time, her son was throwing a fit cause he want a toy, she quickly turned addressing him in a stern voice and said, "You have to be patient!" After getting the shoes; she wanted a discount for the time that she spent waiting, which in total was 2 minutes and 45 seconds (Yes! I did time it, I'm OCD like that).

Guess what...
She got that discount... -__-

"The costumer is always right!" says, my manger with a bitter smile.

At times I think , what a better world it would be if well all, the whole world, had cookies and milk about 3 o'clock every afternoon and then lay down on our blankets for a nap.

The Fix for the Economy...

Wut up people!

Please look at this idea from an email I received as part of a Sociology Listserv...very interesting!

From: cptgil@gmail.comTo: awp79@hughes.net, ajuarez@sanantonio.gov, castroda@aol.com, gomezm@sanantonio.govSent: 1/11/2010 6:32:47 A.M. Pacific Standard TimeSubj: Fwd: [505th] The Fix

The Fix

There recently was an article in the St. Petersburg Fl. Times. The Business Section asked readers for ideas on: "How Would You Fix the Economy?" I think this guy nailed it!

Dear Mr. President, Please find below my suggestion for fixing America 's economy. Instead of giving billions of dollars to companies that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan.

You can call it the "Patriotic Retirement Plan":

There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work force. Pay them $1 million a piece severance for early retirement with the following stipulations:

1) They MUST retire. Forty million job openings - Unemployment fixed.

2) They MUST buy a new American CAR. Forty million cars ordered – Auto Industry fixed.

3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage – Housing Crisis fixed.

It can't get any easier than that!!

P.S. If more money is needed, have all members in Congress pay their taxes. Mr. President, while you're at it, make Congress retire on Social Security and Medicare. I'll bet both programs would be fixed pronto! (If you think this would work, please forward to everyone you know. If not, please disregard).

Procrastination

Well, what did you think I was going to write about? I'm probably close to the last one who signed on here. So, I decided to plug in to YouTube the word "Procrastination," to see what comes up, and an Ellen DeGeneres video came up. Well, I tried to download the video several times, and I could not do it. So all I can say about procrastination that she says, and I agree with it, is: "you'll do anything but the thing you're supposed to do."

With witing, I don't know, it may be too hard. I guess that's it, because I don't mind reading; in fact, if I read what I want to read, I enjoy it. But writing about it, I don't know, I have to figure out why it bothers me; or just do it, and then maybe I'll figure that out. In other words, stop procrastinating. Hmmm, I wonder if someone could figure out a multiple choice test that would substitute for an essay? Maybe not; actually, that probably wouldn't be a good idea. At least writing might be more interesting.

Haiti relief

Hey everyone, I know that everybody is busy with school, work, lives, etc. I know that the economy is also rough and a lot of us are short on funds. I only ask for the sake of our fellow people that are suffering through really harsh times as I speak. To those who have cellphones (I'm pretty sure 90% of you have one), please text 'HAITI' to '90999' and $10 will be donated to the Red Cross relief and charged to your cell phone bill. There are other ways to donate, follow this link http://american.redcross.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ntld_main&s_src=F8HWA002&JServSessionIdr012=zm5vxylgg1.app194a. It's all for a good cause, thanks everyone.

Thanks for everyone's responses. They made me feel better. I am now excited to start blogging. Bring it on!!! :-)

Life

Life is like a movie, if you've sat through more than half of it and its sucked every second so far, it probably isn't gonna get great right at the end and make it all worthwhile. None should blame you for walking out early. Do something different.

First Time

This will be my first ever blog or bloging.... I don't really care much for these kinds of things! My husband is always online doing research and reading blogs; he tells me about it, however for the most part I can care less! Maybe I will start to like bloging after this... ; )

Beginner

Good morning everyone!!!
I finally was able to set up this account. I am not very good with computers. I am so bad that I dont even have a Face book or My space account. I must be the only one on the planet. So I am the first to admit that I am a beginner at having a blog account/site. So place bare with me. I barely respond to my e-mails. My goal is to learn how to post photos and videos my the end of this course. It looks cool!!! If any body can help me let me know. Have a great day!!!! Be safe in the rain!!! I know it does not rain much in California but slow down. This blogging was not so bad. It is kind of fun. I was scared at first but I think I will enjoy this. :)

Anybody else have this experience?

You added a class that requires a prerequisite but you haven't taken it yet. For some reason, the GET system allows you to register for that class. Now you are trying to scramble around to find another class to replace that class you have to drop. Not to mention, you have to go through that department and get the instructor's approval for you to drop that class and beg the department not to give you a W. The most frustrating part is that you just paid for that book and it cost you 160 bucks. This problem can really discourage some students. This problem needs a solution that can eliminate some of the frustrations that students experience every beginning of a quarter.
Why was it soooo difficult to copy the letters given when signing up for this blog!? I had to do it 5 times, I was starting to get frustrated!!

Library week Day Class: Week 4

Yes!  week 4, not 3.  Next week we have just Wednesday
Night class Library night is Thursday 21st - next week.

TAE YANG!!!

Ridiculous

This economy right now is such a killer. Everything is ridiculously over priced. Ya work more they say..save your money. BUT how can anyone work more if they have to go to school? If you decide to work more and not go to school, you get paid less! But how are you supposed to pay for school? Pull out loans until you cannot pay them off till you are 35 years old? Ya exactly. Oh, and good luck with saving the amount of money you would like to save. Ya I am a but bitter right now as all of you can see. However, I know for a fact I am not alone on this one. After all of this though, one must stay positive. It is the only way anyone can stay sane now a days. Just keep smiling and hopefully things will work out! I wish everyone the best of luck! :c)

QUESTION???

Does anyone know where I can find the sample paper for Paper # 1 ? I remember seeing a link in class but can't seem to find it.

SONG

WEEKEND!!!

Weekend is almost over and i got nothing done... better get started =(... any1 do anything interesting this weeked?

koreanness

"I told myself that this year I’d get over my middle school-era qualms about my fellow Korean (/Korean American) people, and perhaps try some Korean drumming, but I cannot bring myself to get over it and walk my feet over to practice and meet new people and learn something new. I don’t really know if it’s the qualms or my antisocial tendencies or both or something else. Sigh! I feel like I am in constant negotiation with my Korean-ness."

Heroine by the velvet underground

The most common theme in the song is insecurity. Reed is not sure whether he wants to devote himself to a religion or not. He hates the fact that there are so many religions and by devoting himself to one religion it would mean that he would be nullifying the beliefs of other religions. His conscious makes it near impossible to completely believe in one religion, but he also wants a peace in his life and he feels that he has to pick a religion to live by.

radical

"Nowadays you are considered a white supremacist if you are proud of being Aryan. Granted many Aryans are extremists, but you find those in ANY group. I come from an Islamic culture but I am not a radical, I come from Aryan ancestry from within the greater "white" population, but I am not a militant skinhead, I have socialist tendencies in my political views, but I am no Stalin. But living in the US--and I'm sure elsewhere--your differentiating aspects are aggrandized and made controversial. Why shouldn't I be proud of where my language originated and where my people migrated from? I sure as hell shell out enough criticism to show I don't believe in Aryan superiority."

Note To Self

Life is beautiful. It is an opportunity for us to develop as people, explore the world, seek and experience adventures, and the best part is that knowledge is limitless and it is this fact that makes life impossible to be boring. Yes, life has its ups and downs, but there is too much beauty in the world for you to dwell on the downs. It's unfair to you. So yes, life may have some inevitable lows, and unfair sociological circumstances, but it is up to you to make the best out of what life has to offer and you can overcome negativity by embracing the positive.
Don't give importance to what society considers important such as materialistic things, but give importance to things that truly make you happy. Forget the latest trend of clothes or gadget, give significance to, and embrace friendships, family, earth, hobbies, activities, etc.
Life can be so fast-paced in Los Angeles, causing us to get upset over minor things, such as someone cutting us off while we are driving, or being in a line too long. It's important to remind ourselves that those are minor issues that don't require our day to be ruined.
This mind-set is not easy. It is a life process and journey to maintain such a mind-set. I stray away sometimes, because I am a flawed human being like everybody else, but I do my best to live by this. Hopefully this blog serves as a reminder for you.

Lines

I hate it when you're in a line, but it's not even a line because there isn't an order to anything. I hate it when you're made to feel like someone is better than you for no good reason besides that they are more acceptable than you. I find it interesting that regardless of how much someone might not like you, you're still allowed the same rights as other people. If I knew I was going to a club, I would of worn different clothes. Pretentious assholes with stamps can kiss my ass. Patience is a virtue, but it's also a way to break down a person that strips themselves of emotions in order to satisfy the consensus of their superiors(?) Does this mean that bouncers are merely good looking peoples' bitches? What a sad life. I'd rather be fishing.

Man of the House

Anne Lamotte

Since we discussed in class what makes us human, I thought I'd steal an idea from author Anne Lamotte, who might argue that what makes us human is the ability to seek understanding:

"We are a species that needs and wants to understand who we are. Sheep lice do not seem to share this longing, which is one reason why they write so little."

I don't even know what my user name is. I want to be famous enough to wear a mask around all day.

The few are those who prepare against others. The many are those who make others prepare against them.

Being human means beating the odds.

Pulp - Mis-Shapes

An early-90's Britpop gem about English classism and the struggle between the Me and the I:

Blood Type Diet

Blood group O is believed by D'Adamo to be the hunter, the earliest human blood group. The diet recommends that this blood group eat a higher protein diet. D'Adamo bases this on the belief that O blood type was the first blood type, originating 30,000 years ago.
Blood group A is called the cultivator by D'Adamo, who believes it to be a more recently evolved blood type, dating back from the dawn of agriculture, 20,000 years ago. The diet recommends that individuals of blood group A eat a diet emphasizing vegetables and free of red meat, a more vegetarian food intake.
Blood group B is, according to D'Adamo, the nomad, associated with a strong immune system and a flexible digestive system. The blood type diet claims that people of blood type B are the only ones who can thrive on dairy products and estimates blood type B arrived 10,000 years ago.
Blood group AB, according to D'Adamo, the enigma, the most recently evolved type, arriving less than 1,000 years ago. In terms of dietary needs, his blood type diet treats this group as an intermediate between blood types A and B.

Being Human Means One Thing
By 12345678

What one feature distinguishes humans from other creatures? Humans have the ability to be free. Freedom comes to humans in many ways, though many do not have the conditions to realize their freedom. Freedom is the ability to find peace.

Harry S Truman

This is something Harry wrote at 16 - (he was an avid reader)

"This world is made up of all sorts of conditions of men, from the best one could wish to the basest one could imagine. There are men who love money who will do anything for money, who will sell their souls for money. Then there are men who love money for the good that is in it, who like to use it to make others happy. There are men who love everything worldly, love wine women and a good time; they there are those who are so religious they have no time to think of anyone or anything. These men are extremists who run the thing into the ground. I like a man who had enough worldly wisdom to take care of himself; but I like him to have time to love both his God and those around him."

Welcome to 2010 - on common sense

Hi, writers.  This appeared in The London Times and I thought of the daytime Writing Class:

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.
***** He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain; ***** Why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn't always fair; and maybe it was my fault.
***** Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies  ( don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).
***** His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.
*****
Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
***** Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.
***** It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion..
***** Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
***** Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.
***** Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
***** Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers:

I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I'm A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.
