  2. I am interested in observing a synagogue worship. I noticed that LA has a big Jewish community. I am fascinated with Judaism and being Catholic, I would like to experience another religion.

    1. I wouldn't mind doing this one too. But my only day off is Saturdays...do they have anything on Saturdays? I could probably make it from Oceanside on this day if there is.

  3. I have a friend in San Francisco who got a group together (and raised some money) and created 100 sack lunches for the homeless and then they went around and passed them out. Which I think would be awesome except for the collecting money part ..... but maybe that could be part of it. Maybe as a class we could all stand outside for 1/2 hour and see if we could collect $200. I think it cost him about $2 per lunch.

  4. how fun! also what a great thing to do to get, say, an article in the LA Times or at least the Cal State Paper about how to make a nutritious bag lunch. just coming up with the money and the lunch would be great. a "Master Paper" out of that would be to make a "recipe" for how sociology classes could do this.
    e.g.,
    25 Sociology students
    1 dollar each
    10 dollars from the teacher
    3 dollars each from friends
    1 dollar each from parents
3 dollars from each from "begging" at school, on the campus streets
... ok somebody add that up ...
    then
    somebody create the ideal lunch
the 5-10 students who are going to do this divide up the shopping and cooking and packing
    the lunches are distributed
    notebooks are readied
    Go!
Write the whole first part of the LATimes article as a recipe .... oh, what fun! Stories!

  5. What a great recipe!! I also thought of some of us going to Trader joes to ask for donation or peanut butter and jelly and bread ...... if everyone went to their closest Trader Joes ..... just to get the experience of asking. TJs is usually pretty good about this type of stuff. When I was president of a local Little League they would always come through with "stuff" ..... they just aren't big into donating money. But, what's the difference? We would need food not money. My friend in SF did peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, a candy or little packet of cookies, a carton of juice, maybe an apple sauce ..... anyway, all stuff that you could prepackage except for making the sandwiches. That was the only time consuming thing (but not that time consuming) and they they just did a line and put everything in. They just didn't want things that could spoil ..... like no fruit, no milk etc. I would totally bake homemade chocolate chip cookies if someone wants to do this with me.

    1. this would probably be more personal than sociological - what do you think? how could it be made into something sociological to observe? it's a wonderful thing to do and has sociological implications, but not sure about observation.
