Living Off the Grid

I met Jonni McActeer a few years ago. I try to see her at least once a year. She lives alone on a self-sustaining farm. She is completely off the grid. No electricity / no cell phone reception. Most everything is run by solar power and a generator when absolutely necessary. She has a solar powered golf cart that she drives around the farm. She lives alone with her beloved standard poodle Osha. The first time I stayed with her it was more than a little disorienting, but it was also very rewarding. She has a goat farm, a garden and several growing domes. She built up most of the farm on her own. She is in her sixties and full of energy, knowledge and experience. She lives off goats milk and fresh veggies and herbs she grows on her land. She is tough as nails. I was so impressed that I put together this video for her. She is currently trying to put together a learning farm to teach others how to work the land. Although she wouldn’t consider herself an environmentalist, she has figured out a way to utilize the resources around her in a very responsible and respectful way.
