Valentine's Day is my mother's favorite holiday. I remember growing up, she always gave me and my siblings a red flower. She is now 73 years old and has kept this tradition. It's funny because I was just thinking, tomorrow is Valentines Day. The first thing that came to mind was that, I must go to my mother's house to receive my red rose. It's amazing how a family member can continue to carry such small detail through out the years. What makes Valentine's Day so special to you? If it does and if not why?

  1. I seems like Valentine's Day is forced on us. It's a total hallmark holiday, but nonetheless it still feels good to get the flowers and candy. I feel like people over-do it when it's not necessary. Why do we have to act a certain way on this one day? Shouldn't we be like this everyday?

I work at a nice restaurant which overlooks the bay so we usually get crazy busy on Valentine's. It's not intimate and doesn't really seem romantic, but people still go out and do it because it's the thing to do.

  2. Maria, your story touched me and I think that is so precious that you look forward to receiving your red rose. It's not the day that touches me; it’s the fact that your mother is the provider of the rose.
I personally do not give a lot of weight to this day. I am not in a new relationship therefore I do not expect my mate to show how much he loves me. My husband and I express our love throughout the year so we don't need an overpriced made up day to solidify our love for one another.
However, I think what your mom does is real special; cherish it and her, while you can.

  3. Personally to me, Valentines Day is just another day. I feel that it is one of those over-rated holidays that benefit the economy. Flowers and restaurants triple their prices because they know that no matter how bad the economy is, consumers are still going to go out and buy flowers just to show their love. I expect love and romance throughout the year. I think everyday should be like Valentines Day -the couple, family and friends should show how much they love each other as much as they can throughout the year.

  4. I have to agree with boo2. I felt I needed to go to the store and get my friends something, just because it's the thing to do. People feel the pressure to give, even when they may not have the means to do so.

My Valentine's was nice though. My mom made food at home, and we invited our closest uncle. I made a cake and we shared laughs and stories.

  5. Yeah, I agree I think V-day is just a money making holiday. I didn't even remember it was V-day until I went to Party City to buy a costume for a party and then I saw people buying loads of ballons and "romantic" items. I then felt guilty for not remembering it was V-day and walked over to the grocery store and I bought some goodies for family and friends.
Which means that I too fell victim of society and society's thoughts of what the norm is. Why did I feel guilty?

  6. WE ARE ALL SUCKERS TO LOVE. IN MY FAMILY WE DONT HAVE ANY TRADITIONS AS YOURS, HOW NICE OF YOUR MOM TO PASS THIS KIND GESTURE OF LOVE TO ALL OF YOUR FAMILY.

  8. i agree when i believe Valentine's Day is forced on us. i always found it sad how we are expected to only celebrate "love" just one day out of the whole year. same goes with thanksgiving. why should we only give thanks for what we have on one day out of the year. one thing my gf and i found funny this year was ppl asking us what romantic things we were going to do this valentine's day. we both laughed at the idea and happily told our friends that we had planned a night of junk food and a rented movie. we both agree that it is much better to show appreciation for one another throughout the year then to feel pressured/obligated to only show it one day.

  9. I think your mom's tradition is charming and precious. I don't know if you have children, but wouldn't it be wonderful if you also gave your children their own red rose each Valentine's Day to keep the tradition going through the generations. What a lovely gesture from your mom.

  11. Thank You Lucky14
Yes I do have children, I never thought about it. But now that you mention it in your honor (UR idea) I will start this tradition.

P.S. I always wanted to carry out something tradition (from my mom) to my children. Again thank you
