The Great Debaters

I found it intersting the color difference of the women in the movie. The two wives shown and the girl debater have light complexion while the main woman singing at the bar has a darker complexion. The bar can be seen as the bad place to be while the home and church is the place where the good women should to be. Good v. bad? Does the skin difference in the women represent this or am I just looking too much into it?

  1. good observation. it would be interesting to find a photo of the young woman who became a lawyer to see if the movie makers were truthful to fact or changed to stereotype the successful black woman. The young man "Junior" should also be studied since he, too, became a known figure. The other young man was very handsome - was that Hollywood or the truth?

  2. I agree with your observation. When I was looking at the movie that was my perception as well. I believe in the 30's lighter skin women were more educated and seen as "good." Whereas the darker skin women were seen as "bad" simply because of the color of their skin. It was ashame to see the black male who was educated still be seen as low class from the lower class whites. This part really upset me very much.

  7. I agree with your obeservation and with MT's. We should find a picture to see if the makers were truthful or if they weren't. In fact, the movie was really good and I would highly recomend it to everyone and to other professors.

  8. Keep in mind, this observation does not remain in the past. If you look at who is seen as beautiful in the AA community, what do you see? The women with lighter skin and "good" hair are the chosen, i.e. Beyonce, Rianna, Holly Berry. The media does not support the beauty in women who may be of darker skin and unpressed hair. You tend to see these depctions of women on 10o'clock news. It makes you wonder how much power the media has over us.

  9. I do see what you mean about the intelligent, female college student being the smartest of the darker skinned black women. I'm not sure if that was done intentionally. However, if she really was light skinned, maybe that's why she came to be well respected and successful later in life. I definitely agree with the imagery portrayed between the bar scene and the church scene. It was a way to describe the stereotypes of the poor blacks in the south and their struggles to be accepted. Religion and education can be seen as their outlets from an unequal society.

  10. "The Great Debaters" is a GREAT! movie.. a perfect example of what Du Bois reffered to as the "color line." Also, rather than submitting to the norm and giving up the debaters continue to pursue their dream.
