Change
I find the recent dialogue that many people are re-enrolling in school due to the economy very interesting. Personally, I find the academic environment to be satisfying and inspirational! It can provide you with numerous opportunities as well as acquaintances. I think that our country is desperate for change (obviously!) and desperate for inspiration. Inspiration is a great catalyst. Perhaps we collectively feel as though we need to arm ourselves intellectually for the future. We must prepare and do the necessary 'work' in order to create a better world. There is a saying that things must get worse before they can get better. I think that this is a very exciting time for everyone in terms of change. I think that we have consciously or sub-consciously realized that we all need to participate and take responsibility for our (collective) future and it is inspiring to me at least to hear that more people are taking that realization and choosing to further educate themselves.

Great post, I completely agree with you. This quote sums it all up: "The real power, as you and I well know, is collective. I can't afford to be afraid of you, nor you of me. If it takes head-on collisions, let's do it: this polite timidity is killing us..." As a people, we have started a transition of change in this country; however, more is needed. I love this class because we have great discussions. There is no other space where I can talk to people from different ethnicities, races, socioeconomic backgrounds, and life experiences. I truly appreciate the healthy discussions that we have in class. It is very much needed in order to progress as individuals. I hope that I am always in a classroom in some way shape or form experiencing this phenomenon.
ReplyDeleteThis quarter I was forced to enroll as a part-time student. I couldn't afford the tuition for full-time, but I also knew that I couldn't afford to miss a quarter. The economy is tough right now, but the feeling I have when I walk out of class is worth the sacrafices I make to be here.
ReplyDeletei wasnt forced to go to school. i chose to go to school for the simple reason that school provides anyone with a lot of job opportunities
ReplyDeleteI believe that education does open plenty of doors for you... its like given you a paddle for you canoe; hoewer, it's how hard or fast you paddle that will get you to where you wanna be... "HARD WORK" and "DEDICATION" are the key concepts that I have found to be most valuable. My current employeer doesnt even look twice at my A.A. or my criminal justice degree they even complain at times because school distracts me to complete projects or reports they need. This job is great pay,a great company but it's not what i love to do, so i continue to pursue my education to get a better understanding of where i would love to work in. "Law enforcement"
ReplyDeleteI started my college education more than 25 years ago, with lots of stops and starts along the way. I currently have a terrific job, and I have no immediate plans to change careers once I get my degree. I am attending school not to get ahead in the work world but to expand my horizons and finish what has for me been a long, arduous process. While in school I am learning the subject matter, of course, but also a lot about myself as a person. Here's to all of us for working hard for whatever personal educational goals we have!
ReplyDeleteI agree that school can be a gratifying experience. I have heard many poeple within my social networks that they are afraid of losing their jobs and should probably go back to school. I have also heard the other side, however, that having a degree is useless and most jobs don't even care if you have one. Personally, I've experienced both sides and can see where both viewpoints are valid. I believe your life will only be what you make of it. Things aren't going to be handed to you. Being out of school for a few years, I've made the decision to come back and work toward my goals because I believe change can only come from within.
ReplyDeleteNo matter if you believe in Obama and his fight for change or you believe he will fail. having a man of color in the office is the change America needed and wanted.
