How Can I be Me

It is hard to be oneself, why? because we are constantly told by the media that one should act or be a certain way. From the weight we should have to the mattress we should sleep on. "You should be yourself" is what teachers tell you growing up - easier said than done. Individualism should be the message given not what brand you should wear nor how provacative you should act to get attention (especially women)

  1. indeed, easy said than done. unfortunately, a vast majority of people today drown ourselves in media coverage and brainwashing. we train ourselves to be a certain way or to act in an appropriate manner because if we aren't doing what "normal" people are doing, then we are considered the outcasts of society, such as rebels, or communists, to being considered losers of civilization. We are then forbidden to socialize with the "normal" people and shun.

  2. YOU CAN'T! WE ARE ALL FAKE. WE GET SO CAUGHT UP WITH ALL THE BULL**** THAT WE BUY INTO IDEOLOGIES AND WE ISE THESE IDEAS TO FORM OUR WAYS OF LIFE.

  3. Yeah, I get what you mean at 26 one should understand who they are and what direction in life to take but I'm lost. When I feel like I'm being myself I get judged and when I act like what I think I should be I also get judged. Which makes me even more confused because then that means were all confused and what does that say about society and the people we associate with.

  4. i blame it on the media and society...they're in our face all the time with the newest and most current. And we normally fall for it like suckers.

  5. It is very difficult to be yourself in our society. The fact that the concentration of mass media is held by a small handful of corporations all driven for control and profit is a scary thought. Some of my favorite things to do to get to know "me" include expanding your musical horizons, read something interesting either online or in print every once in a while, and by seeking hobbies I truly enjoy. Turning off the T.V. is an amazing thing since it does two things: gives you time to do other things and disconnects you from a powerful control medium. Seek meaning in what you do with your life by being yourself. That is the only thing that will bring genuine sense of self.

  6. I feel like I am more myself in private. My closest family and friends gets to see me without the fakeness or the predetermined behavior. I can act any way I want and not be judged, whereas in public I would not dare display some of my quirky behaviors because I would be labeled as insane, weird, or uncouth, when in fact its a release valve for me to temporarily rid myself of being socially contained.
