Taking things Personal

Mother often tells me not to take things personal. At first I thought this would be simple for me to do.With age, I have realized that is not the case. I constantly remind me to do this even though it is part of human nature to make oneself the victim. Next time someone is yelling at you , remind yourself that it's their issue and not yours. Thanks MT for reminding me that today.

  1. Lolalaloca, I did a post titled "The Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz. It is an excellent read. It is an awesome book that gives more insight on words and actions and how we allow negative energy affect who we are. Yet we ourselves need to be conscious of the energy that we put out through verbal and non verbal transmission. It's hard to explain the book but it is powerful. I would recommend it to anyone who has not read it.

  2. I totally agree with you... I currently have lots of family problems.. which at times its a lot of negative energy... although I consently tell myself I am not going to let this negative energy bother me "it does".. when I get into arguments with my mother. she tends to be a verbal person who tends to say mean things and even though i tell myself don't listen. it still afects me a lot...

  3. I see a number of posts mention "negative energy". Perhaps a solution is to transform (metaphorically) the negative into something positive. Instead of ignoring the negative comments, find something positive about them that you can use, either to change the situation or to understand the other person better. Just a thought.

  4. I think it's hard to not take things personal. This reminds me of the time when my dad yelled at me. I won't talk back to him but rather ignore him. I am stubborn, so I would wait until he talks to me.

  6. I agree with you superstar. It's hard not to take things personal. I have been trying to work on that for a while now. My mother has also told me to not take things personal; however, its hard when you have people saying things to you. According to Mead, I let my "I" react to everything and its not to later where my "me" is saying "did I say that?" I am trying my best to not let my "I" come out as much. I understand what you're trying to say lolalaloca, and I'm trying to not let people's issues get the best of me; however, like superstar said it is hard not to take things personal. I am stubborn too and when my dad yells at me, I ignore him as well.
