MISSED CLASS

Hello fellow students I too am missing class today. My son had his two wisdom molars pulled yesterday and is not feeling well this morning. I would also appreciate if anyone can blog the instructions for paper #4 and in-class notes.

So i won't be able to make it to class today. I'm battling the flue with a really bad cough and i REALLY don't want to spread it around... but i would really appreciate if anyone can update me after class on what the Prof. went over today..

I have to admit I am very bad in checking the blogs, but I am so happy I did so today. Gosh i've been working on this paper for quite a while now and other class assignments, that i've been so stress out. What a relief to know that Paper 3 has been pushed back. Now I could go to sleep with no worries.

You made my evening. Coming home from work to find out that I have a few extra days to completely understand the assignment. Now I am able to focus on the midterms I have tomorrow. :)

Breaking the Maya Code

This movie was great!! 2hours long but I am able to stay up to watch it through. talked about origins of the language and how imaginative the Mayans had to be to develop this hieroglyphics. Many anthropologist, archeologist thought that every symbol had its own meaning, but a young man followed the lead of a Historian by the name of Thomas to break the hieroglyphics to phonetics.

An estimated 90% of the Mayan Hieroglyphics are read able through the discovery that some ancient Mayan's learned to write in Latin. With the Latin writings, linguist were able to decipher most of the hieroglyphics.

The landmarks is also a story within a story, which talks about the Reign of Leaders. I highly recommend this documentary.

student clubs/orgs need to step up

It seems to me, as someone who is a student and also employed at CSULA, that the students involved in the approx. 150+ student orgs/clubs on campus need to step up and become more involved. It seems like many students who are in clubs/orgs (e.g. frats, sororities, christian crusade for christ, etc.) are a part of them not for altruistic reasons, but to pad their resumes for grad school or other self serving interests. The Center for Student Involvement just threw our 2nd annual 'Think Pink' breast cancer awareness event, soliciting the participation of every organization and club on campus; not to ask them to assist in raising funds for a great cause (albeit an over publicized and obviously the en vogue charity; what happened to AIDS fundraising?), rather to just show up to the event to support a good cause (esp. the sororities...WTF happened to so-called sisterhood you hypocrites ?). Despite the director of CSI soliciting the student groups several times via email to simply participate by attending the event, we received a PATHETIC lack of responses, and a majority of those that did RSVP never even showed up. If you're in a social frat/sorority, that's cool, but if you're in a service type org., F***ing show it. I am extremely disappointed and saddened by the lack of participation and self serving attitudes especially of by the sororities and fraternities on campus. It seems you all love to talk a big game, but the fact is that you are all a bunch of self serving punks. Just my thoughts.

Crips n Bloods film...shock!!

I watched Crips n Bloods...I was actually shocked at how interesting it was.
I did not think it was going to have such an inside perspective of both gangs.
I am really happy I chose to watch it....and I'm more shocked that I came out of that film feeling a bit sympathetic for them!

structure: Beginning, middle, end. OK: U must include in the 2 pages of substance:
4 citations, one of which is a website and to fulfill the following requirements:
.... 2 varieties of "in line" citations (Christina will tell you the two versions)
.... 1 of your citations to be an article with 3 or more authors (U may have to go retrieve another article)
.... **extra** - cite an article w the same 3 authors more than once, do the 2nd cite as U learned (or 2 cites of an article with 3,4,5 authors, also ok).
.... 1 of your cites will be a "block quote" (Christina will show you)
.... all citations are in reference; all references are cited
The objective of this paper is to make all references accurately & to fulfill above. It is NOT to plumb the depths of the substantive topics (your 2 search terms)
Still, it is a paper, so it needs a beginning, middle, and end. I'll write you a sample as soon as I can, but there is already a sample student paper posted on line.

Today's class was a lil boring, but full of info.I never knew if i was doing it correctly bc my profs in the past didnt comment on it.. so even tho it was boring im glad i was there.!!! i like the librarian: she seem's like a down to earth person.. Not crazy! lol

Wow! There is so much info today about ASA format style...but at least there is a nice & simple printable guideline for all this info & Im glad she used examples during her presentation. It helped!

Last Sunday, I completed the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco, CA. Yep- the full 26.2 miles. The energy was amazing! Groups of cheerleaders, volunteers, and musicians cheered on the 20,000 runners who participated, but one sign stood out to me from the crowd. It read: PAIN IS TEMPORARY, REGRET IS FOREVER. The whole time, I was repeating to myself "C'mon legs!!" Although in my mind I know the pain will be temporary, my body still really hates me right now. Aleve will be my best friend this week. Wave HI to me on campus- I'll be the girl walking at the pace of an octogenarian.

First Paper Reflections

Prof. Tabor shared my paper with the class today. It was so different for me to hear it read aloud. I very much enjoyed the first assigned topic, and am grateful to have had the chance to really REFLECT. I agree with a comment from another student that this paper was "the easiest paper to write, but also the most difficult ".

I am glad the the prof gave us 1 more week for the essay!

I think I listen too much to music while studying....guess i need to settle down now for this paper huH? Seems like alot of people have a hard time identifying with what they have conflict and concensus with. I know I do, but I just want to thank the professor for being so generous and giving us more time on the conflict paper. I guess I have conflict with writing the paper and need to reach a concensus to write it?

It seems as though we just started school and I am already stressed out. I feel like time is flying by too fast. Midterms are already here.. ahhhh.. I have 2 midterms in the next 2 weeks and the reading load just gets heavier and heavier. I am doing all my work on time, I am not procrastinating. Honestly, it is time that just vanishes away and I scratch my head and go, "Ahhhh!" Time management is my goal. I want to wish everyone good luck with all their school studies!!

How is it that our President who has not accomplished any major issues in our own country, yet goes out and wins one of the most honored awards that the world has to offer? What is the world coming too when people are blinded by a President who is just giving them an illusion of greatness when in all reality, this guy has not even done a single thing that he had promised us, the people of these great United States and especially anything to help bring "peace" to the world at large??? Man I don't know, but this is some bogus shit....oh well, whatever you guys believe in, just keep in mind what he does in World politics, and see what he actually has done to deserve this award,...absolutely nothing, hahaha.

wow!!!.. today i can honestly say class was great ... it was fun.. although i was a bit shy.. my gitters will be gone for the next round.. hopefully we get to do this more often...

An interestung morning.

I was a little hungover in class today so it was kinda hard for me to be all there but it was nice to see everyone. Go Angeles!!!! Hopefully we'll have another opportunity to do that activity again. Hello kids!

Today's class was awsome.. i loved the whole sharing thing.. it's fun... we should do it every other week. M. tabor is really cool. i love her class. usually the first class of the day is the most boring of all just because you are trying to wake up.. but in her class ... waking up is not hard.. Anyway.... im very excited my boyfriend and i have the weekend planned... Therefore i wont be bored, the only problem is... now i have to do homework now!! :( its's ok.... ill do it. ) . . . see ya monday students!! . . . be careful out there in the real world.!!!

My hates and likes of this paper

I can honestly say that I do hate writing papers, but blogging is different....isn't it? well I hated writing this paper because I hate to write about myself. But when I was reading over it this morning it made me realize how much I have grown since high school. Does anyone else get that feeling or a feeling of great accomplishment? .....I wonder if the conflict and consensus paper will be easier for me..... o yeah....Enjoy the weekend coming up!!!

Another way to approach Paper #1

I just reminded myself of one of the "Four Agreements": be impeccable with your word. You know it if you read the little book "The Four Agreements". Well, if that "agreement" ever sunk in and you did it, it would change your life. It doesn't sound exactly sociological since it is an idea, but we could say it is and idea of socialization and make it work as a vehicle for the paper. So anything that you did and now do not do, or, vice versa, did not do and now do could work: e.g., alcoholism, smoking, negativity, obsession, abuse of any sort, or (on the positive side) working out, praying, "morning pages," being impeccable with your word, or smiling more -- any of these could be the key to who you are sociologically and who you were sociologicall. Just remember to use the moment of revelation-and-change and put it in sociological terms: e.g., how did it change your relationships, your cooperation, your goal setting, your entire dealing with the social world.

About the paper due Wednesday

Dance even if you have nowhere else to do it but in your own living room. read the directions even if you dont follow them. Do not read beauty magazines they will only make you feel ugly!

Music connects us all!

On Saturday night, I was lucky enough to attend the Bienvenido Gustavo! at the Hollywood Bowl!! It is really great to have a young conductor and music director of only 28 to have been added to the Philharmonic! He is a great influence for inner cities that do not have the same privileges as others. His orchestra consisted of children from the South L.A. area and it must have been so impacting for not only the children but the parents as well. The children and Gustavo preformed Beethoven's 9th symphony to 18,000 people and it was also broadcast-ed around the world. The children only had 2 years of experience, and they played it beautifully! What an amazing night filled with love for community and it ended magnificently with a firework show to celebrate Gustavo's welcoming! :D

"Me" and "I"

some people mix up George Herbert Mead's "Me" and "I" and think that once upon a time when they were young they were all "Me" and now they are all "I" - but it doesn't go that way. The self is always a pattern of negotiation between the two. Even when you were infants, you were sometimes "willful," i.e., you had your "I" moments. Your "I" moments are when you are doing things your way. And now that you are adult, you still have your "me" moments - you are a "me" to get along, be social, meet expectations. Me-I-Me-I is a process.
Your "I" can perhaps be better seen by dividing it in two: sometimes your "I" emerges in rebellion - maybe because you were too obediant and something inside you said, "Too much! Stop!" So an "I" can be a rebel. Other times the "I" emerges in creativity - without destroying or rebelling, you say, "My way - I'm going to create a new way." Hope this helps. Use the terms I, Me, We if they help you see "Who am I Sociologically (and Who Was I Once Before?)"

Hey everyone, your neighborhood Statutory Ape here. This Saturday the 3rd there is going to be a gathering of the people at a place called Puvungna (which means "Gathering Place" in the Tongva language) located on the Cal State Long Beach Campus (the field near the Japanese gardens that is across from the dormitories). It is an annual event where the Native people of Los Angeles come together to hang out, eat, socialize, and at the end of night the Bears come out to dance for everyone. I am inviting anyone who would like to come, to come out and check out this event. If one is interested I will post up some info on it, it is a good thing to learn and try to understand other peoples culture, so come if you wish, I believe that it should start around 5 PM, it is outdoors so bring a jacket, thanks...Mr. Chango.
