SEVEN POUNDS

This weekend, I had the opportunity to watch Seven Pounds, starring Will Smith.

Normally, I am not a Will Smith fan. I dislike the character which show him running. I find it very stereotypical, as if the only thing a black actor can do in a movie is run.

However, I found Seven Pounds an emotional movie to watch. I have not been able to figure out the significance of the title "Seven Pounds." Can someone explain the significance? Can someone count the seven strangers.

Thank you.

  1. I saw this movie too and loved it! I was able to count the seven strangers. Maybe you have to see it again. I would name them for you here, but I don't want to ruin it for anyone else. I found the meaning of the title "Seven Pounds" to mean that the character was carrying the weight of seven people's lives on his shoulders; that in turn changed his life forever. You know what I mean?

  2. I saw that movie as well, and also loved it! However I didn't find it to be sterotypical in the event that a black man was running, if you look at any typical scary movies white/black/mexican etc. people run too..It all depend on the role that the person has to play.. Don't be so harsh on the black race.

  3. SPOILER ALERT!!!!
    (you've been warned!)

I saw the film over xmas with my folks; we speculated that the "seven pounds" might be the weight of the donated organs. Just a thought.

I was actually very disappointed in this film. I felt that because the plot was so simplistic and was completely developed within the first 20 minutes, the movie stagnated. There was no story arc, no plot progression. The audience figures out early on (I've asked around!) that Smith caused the accident that killed seven people, but it was filmed+edited as if to suggest that this was a surprise ending. Plus I felt the romance was not at all believable and tacked on for hollywood purposes.

Not a sociological post, just my opinion as a film aficionado!

  4. SPOILER ALERT - 'you've been warned' - that's a great way to start a statement. I haven't seen the film, I felt warned, and I could decide whether to read on or not. Too many reviews and previews ruin movies - and overly high expectations can ruin them too.
