CHANGE FOR BOTH

As the fight for equality continues, there continues to be a need for reform on what is expected from both genders.

Consider some examples:
1. The career woman who wants equality in the work place but still expects the man to open the doors for her, pay for their outings, let her go in first, etc.
2. The married career woman who is still expected to do the majority of housework or cooking.
3. The stay-at-home dad who only considers child care as part of his task and not the cleaning and cooking.
4. The stay-at-home dad who is seen as not providing for his family.
5. The man who is looked down upon because he does not take the opportunity of a leadership position.

We live in a patriarchal society. Unless we have a complete transformation at the social structure level, we can not have equality among the sexes. This change must be internalized by both males and females. Women can not expect the men just to change.

  1. I agree. There are differences in structure of men and women, but in regards to abilities, I find it to be exact. One may have more of an advantage than the opposite sex, but it shows that the other must work harder to be matched against as an equal. Then again, everyone is different with different perspectives of whether men and women are truly "equal". It depends on how one carries themselves, whether they are the macho manly type or the sensitive men that can relate to women and be sympathetic to their wants and needs. In addition, the woman can be independent and strong or fragile and dependent, or perhaps both. It's like in a relationship, where in order to come to terms with both misunderstandings/disagreements, both will have to work equally to come to a compromise or agreeable solution. One cannot just do all the work!!

  2. Most men and women were raised differently when growing up in their childhood life. They take what they learned and create different environments in society. This is why it can lead to many misunderstandings and differences between who is higher in position.

  3. I totally agree with Superstar.. we as people come from different cultures and up bringing.. some of us were raised and brought up to where the man was the bread maker and the woman was the stay at home mom. However in todays society it takes both parties to survive this horrific economy..Theres no such thing as equality...it's all about survival..

  4. I agree. We need to redifine gender roles, or eliminate gender roles altogether. Gender roles place expectations and limits us as male or female to do things outside of what is expected. TIMES ARE CHANGING, especially in this economic crisis.
