The Mythical Self

Self is an illusion. It is unnatural and not of one's own making. It is a created existence by external forces.

  1. that's the way the enlightenment gurus speak of the self: the self is an illusion. does that mean sociologists study illusions?

  2. In essence "yes". Who is self? Can you say who self is without spoon-fed ideals?

  3. wonderful! it makes you think about you as a person that is part of society and as an individual. it seems as though it's inevitable about how one would be. this made me wonder about my own self...

  4. Ya...I think that is really true. In our own heads we naturally see ourself as the most important thing, I think it takes a lot of socializing to change this perspective. I also know I base my perception on my self on external factors, even though I try not to, for example, work, grades...if I'm doing good in all these things then I'm doing good.

  5. Unfortunately self is an illusion because we don't always find our true selves due to the fact that we always want to be accepted. We try to fit into society - becoming what they want us to be and not our try self. Sad but we all are scared of rejection

  6. I read a book in the past that stated that we are all in a dream status or more so like a nightmare. It is until we remove ourselves from having expectations and LIVE THE MOMENT, just here just now, it is when we are truely ourselves. Nothing else is ... just you.

  7. I couldn't agree with you more. It is hard thought to live in the moment. For me personally, I have to keep motivated by my plans tomm. or even a week from now.

  8. the guru would say to live in the moment by doing something physical - following the breath, for example, or, as Ekhardt Tolle says, by keeping part of our awareness on the "inner body". With that hook to calmness, then, yes, you can turn to what you want "tomorrow" - but tomorrow is just another Now.

  9. Yes, it is important for each individual to focus on the present rather than dwell in the past. There are several things that each person has to deal with in their own daily lives and we should only worry about NOW. We need to keep in mind that life is short and make sure that we live every moment to the fullest.

  10. The self is an illusion, unnatural and not of our own making? I completely disagree. True our view of self is due largely to societal pressures, but no more or less than our other networks. Your comment indicates that without society self would not exist at all. Is a person alone in the woods not a person?

  11. Sure.. a person as well as an individual exist. However, self is made up. So I pose the question to you that I posed earlier. Who is self? Can you explain it without spoon-fed Ideals.

  12. I don't know.....my "self" is different from your "self", and maybe what I feel my self to be you would consider to be spoon-fed ideals. I guess my point is that just because some individuals cave in to societal pressures more than others (although of course we all do to some degree) this doesn't mean that their self does not exist. Each self is still individual because we cave to these pressures differently. Without self we would be individual beings but we would not be unique beings, and clearly we are.

  13. I think that my self may be illusion and that I can come up with a list of what I am not. However, I am forced to live in acceptance of what I think I am if I want to live in society. Also, on a random note I have always found it interesting that what we actually see (visually) is the past. We continually see the past.
