SEX WORKERS RIGHTS

HOW DO YOU GUYS FEEL ABOUT RIGHTS FOR SEX WORKERS? SEX WORKERS MEANING PROSTITUES, ESCORTS, STRIPPERS, ETC. IN ONE OF MY SOC COURSEs, MY PROF ALLOWED A SEX WORKER TO SPEAK ON WHY SHE FEELS PEOPLE LIKE HER DESERVE RIGHTS. SHE FEELS many sex workers are not forced into prostitution but do the work by choice. SHE HS BOTH A BA AND MA FROM SCHOOLS SUCH AS UCLA UC BERKLEY. SHE FINDS SEX WORK QUITE FUN, AND FINANCIALLY PLEASING. HOWEVER, SHE DOES NOT LIKE GETTING ARRESTED FOR HER WORK. SHE IS CURRENTLY ON TRIAL FOR BEING CAUGHT DOING SEX WORKER, AND THE EVIDENCE AGINST HER ARE CONDOMS, WHICH SHE FINDS EMBARASSING. WHEN SHE FIRST CAME INTO THE CLASROOM, I thought: Is she seriously taking to us about sex workers' rights? BECAUSE I ALWAYS HAD AN NEGATIVE OUTLOOK ON IT. BUT AS SHE STATED HER CLAIM I BECAME MORE UNDERSTNDING. I'LL LEAVE WITH 2 QUOTES FROM HER "Some people are not sexually desired by others, so they have to pay for sex." "I am tired of undercover cops arresting me for my job."

  1. I'm all for it. I don't believe there needs to be a state restriction in something such as sex worker rights. It is something that has been done since early civilization around the world. It is the 21st century and women need to be given greater rights to do what ever they please with their own bodies. Some have to do it in order to provide for their loved ones. In this case, the woman you were talking about was clearly knowing what she was doing. Going to great UC's and receiving a post-graduate degree clearly shows she has her head on her shoulders and if this is what she loves for whatever the reasons stated may be then she should be held responsible by her very own actions--not by having higher authority intervene.

  2. We were discussing sex jobs at my my co-workers and I had our pros and cons. My co-workers felt that stripping was a decent way of earning a living. I agreed, however, the only way I felt that stripping was an acceptable type of employment was if the strippers were furthering their education. I've seen many documentaries where strippers put themselves through school with the money they earned from stripping so that's cool. These documentaries also show the downside of stripping which is drug dependencies and eventually prostitution. Once a person isn't in the right state of mind to make logical decisions and they have a distorted outlook to their decisions then I'm NOT for it. Furthermore, good looks only get you so far and I'm afraid that those that strip just to get by, once their good looks fade they are not going to have anything to fall back on. As to should they get workers rights: I'm not sure I feel that that type of employment is typically surrounded with drugs and alcohol abuse that I'm not sure how society would end up if they had rights to their employment-- I'm on the fence.

  3. Yes, i too was in the classroom when the sex worker spoke. She was to me, off the wall. Although she made some good points on the whole sex worker job field, how she thought it should be legalized, I personally do not agree with this lifestyle. I do not think that it should be legalized because I have a six year old and I think about the next generation. The sex worker, i felt should not have been allowed in the classroom without proper approval because of her outrageous line of illegal work. She was educated yet crazy at the same time, God Bless her!!!!

  4. Hahaha I had the same class you did. She was very outspoken and I was shocked to hear how open she was about her line of work. I'll never forget it. They might as well grant sex workers more rights since people use their services anyway. Sex is such a taboo subject, and people are so reluctant to talk about it. It's like wow get over it, it's just sex. We are adults aren't we, stop acting like a little immature kid and acknowledge that sex is natural and pleasurable. People should respect that sex is part of life and if someone wants to be open or not about their views or experiences then leave it alone. Some see the sex topic as inappropriate or appropriate, it really depends on the person and their values. But there is nothing wrong with sex. Sex workers are apart of society so you might as well grant them rights to exist and make a living at what they do best or choose to do. No one has the right to judge them or anyone else.
