Just Curious

How is the economy affecting you?

My boyfriends hours at work have been cut dramatically he went from working a 45-50 hour work week to a 15- 20 hour work week. I on the other hand am working longer hours so I am exhausted by the end of every week. I'm now constantly stressed out about bills and expenses. To top it off my spending habits have gotten out of control. I keep spending money on items that I don't need and I can't stop. This weekend alone (Friday & Saturday) I spent $360 on concert tickets, entertainment and dinning out. I'm living a lifestyle that I cannot afford. I want to save money just in case the economy gets worse but I can't. My boyfriend never says no, so it's hard for me to stop.

So, I was just curious to know how it's affecting your lives?

  1. I had the same problem. I used to write a list of the things that I need to buy and the things that i dont need to buy. Maybe if you write down the things that you dont need to spend your money it will be easier not to do it. Also, talk to your boyfriend about it.

  2. stars88 has a good point. or maybe you could write a list of what you got for $360. and what you could have gotten. $360 is half of what I paid for this laptop a year and a half ago. was dinner that great? I knew someone who stopped drinking - not for moral or prudish reasons, but just because he thought of how he felt the next morning. sometimes we just gotta do what makes sense.

  3. Both my husband and I get paid once a month. What has worked for us is paying all of our bills in the beginning of the month no matter what. That way all the bills are paid and we don't default on our cards. We eat out because we both work and go to school but I have already averaged our food expenses and budget that in. Overall it is until YOU decide that you can't keep spending your money.... our motivation is buying a house. So everytime we think about going out or going shopping with think about the house. Give yourself something to think about :o)

  6. I hate what is happening right now. It sucks big time. I might get laid off from my job this coming July, but I don't know. I watch my spending, but sometimes I just want to be able to go places and have fun too. Not the mention having to pay back student loans. I'm very stressed out right now. I want to save money too, but it's so hard when you have bills to pay, and everything keeps raising in prices. I hope the economy changes soon. I hate feeling this way. I hate feeling stressed out all the time.

  7. For the past few months I've been saying that I haven't felt the effects of our bad economy. I suppose I spoke to soon. This week I learned I may be out of a job in a couple months. I work for Warner Music Group in the Accounts Receivable/Credit dept. and the company is planning on outsourcing our department. It feels odd being a product of globalization. I felt quite secure at my job for a while, and now I'm wondering how I'm going to pay my rent if I don't find something to replace it. I said it before, but now I REALLY believe it; this economic climate is affecting everybody and every industry in some way. Everyone who has a job, be thankful!!

  8. I totally agree with you...I lost my job and everything. I am trying to find another but it is so hard. I just recently moved of campus and am sharing an apt. with a friend but with the loss of my job rent is hard to make as well as other expenses throughout the month. I share ur pain. Hopefully we will see better days in months to come. I am praying for our country!!!! We can make it!

  9. I definitely understand everyone's comments. We watch how we spend our money but we still want to buy ourselves a little something, regardless how small, to reward ourselves for budgeting our money and not feeling completely cut out from a small luxury.
The economy has affected my income. I am a server in a torist area and relly on tips as part of my income. The volume of customers has significantly gone down. Going out to dinner has become a luxury that people are cautious of. I am thinking of getting a second job, but at the same time I am scared two jobs and a full school schedule can be physically and emotionally draining.
Hopefully you all have a close network of friends who you can relly on for comfort and help during these hard times.

  11. In many occasions I caught myself in the same situation, spending freely and buying stuff I really didn’t need. I started paying more attention on my expenses. I found very helpful double questioning myself before I purchase anything. Every time I go shopping, I question myself if I am buying a needed or nonessential item. It seems this tactic is working very well with me.
