Mechanical and Organic Societies

Some of us were talking after class about this distinction and your assignments.  I try to make the writing assignments a combo of Mecahnical and Organic:  Mechanical in that I am a "stickler" about form, composition, BME, and grammar, but organic in that I leave you open about how to approach the topic.
In classes, some of you prefer a "mechanical" approach where EVERYTHING IS CLEAR about EXACTLY what you have to do to get that "A" and some of you dislike an "organic" organization where you get to be free to create as you will.  Think about your "type" - the classes you seek, the major you picked.  These terms can help us see.

  1. Thanks for this post. It gave me a better understanding about what we reviewed in class.

  2. yes - let's think of other examples too.
In highly traditional families, everyone knows what is expected. This then can wreck havoc upon one person who emerges from that family into the "modern" world where what you are is more "up to you".
