so much for our future...

I have been planning my fiance's 22nd birthday for months now and I was so excited when the day came so when we get off the freeway our car overheats. And we stopped at a 7 eleven and added water so we parked the car and still clubbed. So when we get out the club we decide to head home.. and literally when we get off the parking structure the car starts over heating so we still took the car and got off again to add water by csula.. so once we add the water so we were like ok we should be ok now.. well then the dam car doesn't wanna turn on.. we stood there for a while tring to start it and then all the water we put just came out so the car started and we got on the freeway and we just drove the car and it was overheating again it broke down a block away from my house.. so ne next day we had to take it to the machanice and he said that the engine burned and we had to replace it and it would be 3000 to rebuild it.. I was so sad when he said that because my fiance and I have been saving up for a while to get married next year and put a down payment for our house now.. we have to get another car and its going to take us longer to get married and get our house.. and it just broke my heart cuz we have been pulling the wedding back and back.. I just feel as I'm never going to be happy.. so if anyone knows of a place were they sell use car for a good price please let's me know.. Thanks for listening to me I just had to let these feelings out..

immature

A few days ago I added a certain individual as a friend on Facebook. When we were in high school I didn't get along with this person because I thought that person was really immature and me honest as I was and still am, told that person I didn't like them because of it. The problem then was not so much the way that person acted but the remarks that the person made about others. I mean we are all entitled to a certain level of immaturity to keep us from going insane in the adult world, because deep down we don't want to face the cruel reality that we have grown. But I guess some people never do grow even if just a bit. When I added the person I figured, we were in high school way back in the age of the dinosaurs time has passed maybe they've matured. Boy was I wrong, apparently maturity hasn't kicked in yet, and I find it frustrating when I come across the stupid remarks that person makes. Now I'm just contemplating the idea of "de-friending" that person. Have any of you ever dealt with such individuals?

Writing

I really do think writing is my weakest point. So instead, I share this with you. I think it's pretty brilliant. I hope you think so, too. And don't be deceived by the first 50 seconds, it gets really good (and crazy) after that.

"Social Dellusion Clearly Constructed"

What are your motives and thoughts?
Maybe we will do some quantum writing this quarter! I thought you might appreciate this. Namaste!

Hello everyone, I have to admit that I never thought I would see a George Strait video posted on a class blog. I guess you never know! "Blue Clear Sky" tops "Troubadour" hands down though...

just noticed...

that I am not the only first time blogger! Yay! =) hope everyone is enjoying their day off from school!

Great Song For This Class

Far from ordinary...

EXCITED !!

So, this is my first time blogging and I'm very excited. Problem now is I don't know what to write. Hopefully as time progresses I am able to express my thoughts and ideas freely.

mixed feelings...

first week of school was not as stressful as I thought it would be, I'm interested in the classes I'm taking this quarter. on my way to my dear friends Daughter's services, she was only 11 years old, she had so many complications during her time on earth. this is the kind of passing is very sad, but was expected, know she is whole in heaven, jumping and playing like a normal child should....
upset about the shooting in Montebello this Monday so much madness in this world, upset at the person that passed he should have not had a gun, and the cops could of shot him below the waste, he left a daughter behind, and I know his brother well... We never know what battles individuals are going through.....sad

Hi everyone! I am posting this prior to going to sleep. I just wanted to get this off my to do list. See ya!

Intro! ;)

Hello, everyone. I'm actually on certain blogs commenting like crazy all the time, with about 3 old ones of my own, so this is just another avenue to spout more nonsense, on my part, and get graded for it! :D

Good luck, everyone

Not Much Into Blogging

Hello to my fellow classmates... Im a first time blogger, so let's see how it goes=)

Creativity- are you prepared?

Blogging?!?! Such a modern twist to such a traditional subject. I'm excited for this class and the journey I'm beginning with all of you. I especially like the video shown during the first class (even though the presenter thought he was funnier than he really was). The part that stuck out most to me was when he said something along the lines of we have to be prepared to be wrong in order to be creative. I found this to be particularly interesting because I couldn't think of a single time during my 26 years on earth where going against the majority was encouraged. I was wondering what everyone's take on this was, do you remember when you stopped being creative? or do you feel you were brought up in a setting that encouraged creativity?

New To This

Hello all! I am new to blogging, but I look forward to posting from time to time. I also look forward to getting to know all of you. Let's make this quarter fun :-)

First Time

Hi everyone. I have never written a blog before. I know people share ideas, thoughts and opinions on their blogs. The blogs spread knowledge and teach new things. I am ready to enjoy something new.
This Quarter I will try harder to get better grades.

Excited about this quarter

This is my last quarter at CSULA. I feel good but at the same time I am scared. I am not quite sure what I am going to do after I graduate. For now I am going to enjoy the rest of my quarter.

First time Blogger!

New Beginings

I am rather excited to be embarking upon this journey of sociology, particularly with the American slant. I have inserted a photo sent to me by my sociologist godsister in England. Please be patient with me, and I am looking forward to see our interactions both on the blog and in the classroom!  :D

My Final

Class has ended and I will not have an opportunity to share my sentence, unless I do it here. Yes I brought something to share with the class today, but I became shy so I did not read it. It is not a poem; it is simply a sentence I wrote on a journal last Saturday. Before I share it, I will tell you how it ended up on my journal.

Last Saturday I was at a funeral. He was only thirty four years old and his death impacted me in different ways. The death topic had been in my head for a while. Just two weeks before that, I had attended the funeral of a seven year old boy. I was not sure what to do with all of my thoughts and questions so I picked up an old journal, sat in the living room sofa, and began to write.

It all went well for a few minutes. Then a broom got in the way. My mom started sweeping and it seemed to me like she wanted my attention. The more I ignored her, the harder she swept. Finally she said, "This house is filled with dust; and look at this table, if we don't clean it, the wood will be ruined." I was not sure what she was talking about. The house appeared clean to me. Plus I did not understand why she did not bother my brother, who was watching T.V. in his room. I was writing! The point is, she interrupted something that I felt was important for meaningless cleaning. I had become irritated by then and I ended my writing with something like this:

"Clean all you want, but no one will care when you are six feet under."

I feel that many times we do things that do not matter. We focus on things that we believe are important, but they have no meaning. I am not saying that one should not clean her house, but in my mother's case, the house was not dirty. Yes, there was some dust, but who cares? There are more important things out there. There are things that we enjoy, but rarely do. There are things that we do not enjoy, but we make them routine. Why? I say we invest a little more time in what we love.

Fun Final Flease

..I miss the anonymity I had ;|

Dear MT:  I'm not sure if you have plans already set for the final, but I was thinking maybe we could get some kind of democracy in action by having us, the students, suggest and vote on what we can do. Yay? Nay?

Some suggestions:

-recite sociological poetry (I like)
-sociological related film
-meditation
-potluck
-party
-circle pea talk
-"phantom" final, as in, let's "imagine" having a final with full attendance & foolery.

If there isn't enough feedback from the class, I'll stick to whatever happens ;/

Sincerely,  Dan

Spin Class

This reminded me of Tabor's spin class that she was talking about in class today. Just for laughs : )

Need clarification with final paper

I am confused...do we need to number the title page? I know we do not have to number the abstract. Someone please help.

Meditation

Want to thank MT for Tuesday meditation. Was extremely needed for me and im sure for others as well. Highly recomment to check out other videos on youtube from the same individual.

Ha! a link on not-knowing

here, just as we were discussing.  and the following 3-5 posts can help on this last day prior to final paper.
See you at 4:20 to hand in the papers - you can give it to a partner if you want to skip class - but it must be hard copy (not an email attachment)

Final: Due Mar 10 in class

One paper that will lift off from all 6 papers - combine key elements into one work.   Do not write it as if in answer to an assignment, i.e., "... in my second paper I ..."  Write it as if you are composing it in order to express your view of behavior, your own and that of others, as your view does or does not coincide with academic theories.
  • 1 title page (single spaced, same font as paper, centered:
Title, then Name (not CIN), then Date, then Tabor Soc 301,
  • Next page (unnumbered):  1 double-spaced "Abstract" - at least 3 sentences.  use Rule 13: one sentence/paragraph.  Abstract is not indented and is left-justified.
  • 4 pages of text maximum.  Do not "pad" - if you can complete the task in 3 pages, stop.
  • page 5 is References - if need be, text can "spill over" onto top of page 5.  Then References are at bottom
  • at least 3 references, proper ASA format; take care with web references (you need a "source").
Link to guide on this blog, top right.
  • Triple check that first sentence:  make it sing
  • Proofread all
  • Follow all the grammar rules - unless you are very clearly breaking them, with purpose
  • Use Rule 17 - or I will.
  • Use Rule 19:  I see conflict, I see consensus, and I see that people symbolically interact.
  • Use Rule 22 at the end of your paper.  End with a bang.
  • scale
    .5 snappy title
.5 use of title in opening and closing
    .6 grammar
.6 clarity of argument - does the paper progress abd hold together, without redundancies
.6 "punch" - does the paper illuminate the world other than the obvious
.6 does the paper follow the assignment
.5 does the paper follow ASA format in design and citation style
    ___ = 3.9 points

Wednesday, March 9

Page numbering, easy

make two files:  one file for title page and abstract.  one file for the text - that way you can easily insert page numbers starting at page 1

final - write it as if YOU decided on this topic

not as if I asked.
the 6 sides of the cube:
1.  bottom, the foundation, the floor:  this is a "natural law" - something you  believe about how the world works.  e.g., love makes the world go round; education is power; karma operates; effort pays off.  what is YOUR operating belief?  Where did it come from?
2.  Self:  that's you - your temperament, stamina, energy, self awareness - your "Me" and your "I" - you are an individual even though you have been crafted by the social world around you
3.  Networks:  these are the people you see routinely - daily, weekly, annually.  Your family, friends.  Are your networks weak or strong?  Etc.
4.  Social Struture:  what are the social operations, procedures around you?
5.  Change:  all of this lives in change
together those five give you the top:
6.  Your vision

You might wish to use this schema in putting together your earlier works.  Remember you do not have to repeat what your said - unless you want to.  You need not even agree with what you previously said.  Write from now; write like you decided to articulate the way you understand yourself and others.  Where did it come from?

Listen up - this is one of those "changes"

are you subject to this change?

Writer's Block

Wow, I am having the biggest writer's block... I cannot even form the first sentence. Anyone else having the same troubles or better yet had the same issue and overcame it? Please help!

simply curious.

I noticed the paper is out of 3.9. Does that mean it is equivalent to the grading on the previous papers or will this paper be worth more than the others and affect our grade the most?
I saw this 2 years ago and i could never forget it.. enjoy!!

Are there "right" and "wrong" cultures or are they just different?

In India, all women must confront the cultural pressure to bear a son. The consequences of this preference is a disregard for the lives of women and girls. From birth until death they face a constant threat of violence. See the project at http://mediastorm.com/publication/undesired

Just when finals are approaching you're SO POPULAR.

Do you ever notice that you are sought after when things at school are at their worst?! Let me break this down for you: I have 6 papers to write, and it has been nearly impossible to focus as I'd rather do something else anyway. So I finally muster up the will to begin-- my bestie calls and asks, "what are you doing?" Being the altruistic person that I am (0r a natural born sucker) I made lunch for her, her sister, and baby her niece. Fast forward later in the day, the guy I thought forgot me resurfaces... let's end the non-ending cycle with him there. It is now almost 2am and my drunken friend texts me his sexual escapade of the night. I absolutely love my friends love the madness!

Monday, February 28

Make it one over-arching piece for the final

How do I explain my behavior
How do I explain my mistakes
How do I correct my mistakes
How do I explain others’ behavior
Is there any consistency in how I see behavior, mistakes, corrections, and those of others
Did I consciously or unconsciously use a (sociological) theorist in my understandings.

Protests in North Korea

Hopefully this isn't the last time we hear anything about it.
Time will prevail..

More on next paper

Ask yourself:  has your thinking about behavior (your own and that of others) changed since you became a Soc Major?  You MAY select one theorist - or it may be that Sociology in general has prompted you to see behavior a particular way.  If your thinking is not reflective of Sociology in general or one theorist in particular, that's ok.  If you feel that the way you see behavior is thanks to a theorist in another field (e.g., anthropology, poli sci., religious studies, philisophy) you may use that other field.
This question does not assume it should be traceable; it is just asking for reflection.
Reflecting on the question may come in the form of observations back on the weeks of this quarter - or it may reveal to you something new, a way you now see, now that you have reflected.

Just an Anecdote

As I sat to read an article from a magazine last night, I decided I could take some time off from my 20 month old daughter. To keep her busy, I had an Elmo DVD playing on our living room T.V. and toys scattered all over the floor. I know, I may be coming off as a negectful parent. We all need a break though. The way I saw it was: I sit and relax while she gets to explore. I was so concentrated in what I was reading that I did not notice my daughter standing next to me. Suddenly, her little fingers were pulling on my sweater sleeve. She said to me,"Mami, haya" which is Spanish for "Mommy, over there." I was not sure what she wanted so I allowed her to guide me. She took me to the bedroom and into the closet, where I have a shelf with all of our books. She pointed to it and said, "Ma, gimme" (Mom, give me). I finally understood. She wanted a book. She wanted to read too. I gave her two of her books. Holding one in each hand, she walked with me back to the living room and joined me. Although she was interested in the books for no more than five minutes, I was amazed at what I had done by reading. It is true, "Children See, Children Do."

Relaxed due date for this paper

Paper #6 due on Tues, March 1 - rather than Thur, March 24th.

QUESTION: Which theorist (sociologist or sociological perspective or other scientific or philosophical perspective) did you use as you explained behavior, and did you do it consciously?

ADDING HERE: "OR other scientific or philosopical perspective" because one student asked if he could use Charles Darwin. yes.

Procrastinating...

So I'm on Reddit and what not and I discovered this poet. His name is Christian Bok. I wanted to share some of his work with y'all, check it out:

He also has a book titled, Eunoia, where he uses only one vowel for each poem. Ch 1:

The entire book is viewable online for free here.

His work reminded me of one of my favorite spoken word artists, George Watsky.

That is all. Back to work...

Elements of Style Question

As we move through the 22 rules, some get complex and have versions.  Do you do them all?  No, pick one version of the rule - but be prepared to tell the rule and to tell the exceptions or the variants.
So how do you pick?  Remember that part of your job is to express an interesting Sociological fact or observation, whether book-sociology or sociological patterns out there in the world.  So pick a variant of the rule with which you can express good Sociology.
also remember, you express the sentence you create once incorrectly, then once correctly.

Tuesday, January 18

Paper #2 due Thursday

use proper font and 1.25 inch margins and left (only) justified.
TITLE:  when I say to "use title" in the beginning and the end, that typically does not mean to repeat the exact title but, rather, to use a word or phrase that refers back to the title in both the beginning and the end.  Sometimes you might use the entire title, but typically you probably "refer" to it with a word or phrase.

Library ASA format - how are we using it?

CITATIONS:  starting with paper #4, then also paper 5,6,7  at least one citation.
TITLE PAGE:  - we are not using on papers 1-7.  We use one line on page one for title and author and Paper # and date - final paper will have a title page
REFERENCES - put on page 2 for paper 4,5,6,7.  Have an official reference page for final paper.
ABSTRACTS - none until final paper.  It goes atop page 1, properly formatted.
AND ... guess what?  There is no paper #8!  There are just 7 papers and then a Final, cumulative paper due on the final day of class, March 10.
