i am sorry to hear that you are not learning, Just Me. Maybe come see me in my office hours or after class? It's good to express this, however - do not be afraid of that. It could be that other people do not feel they are learning, and I should know that.
Primarily the class in writing is an opportunity to practice writing and receive feedback. However, ideas are also transmitted in class time. Here are some of them:
Grammar Lessons, assorted **Rules 1-7 and 17, which is "less is more" **Structure of Writing Lessons **A good title wraps up the beginning and end **Each paper 3 paragraphs min; each paragraph 3 sentences min **The paragraph exercise: like a poem (tonight) **Write about what you Love **Morning Pages will help free the inner workings of your mind
**Sociology is not: Psychology, History, Politics, Opinions, or "Story" **Sociologists might not agree upon the overarching question of the field. **Consensus and Conflict are two points of view that can be applied to any group. They spring from Marx and Durkheim. Marxism main concepts. Durkheimian analysis main concepts. (Weber and Simmel to come, completing the four foundational pillars.) **All groups have certain elements, which we compiled together and are listed here: http://writingsoc.blogspot.com/2012/01/looking-ahead-to-paper-2.html **Strong networks and weak networks and their strengths and weaknesses **That the Granovetter is the most cited article in sociology **That all groups have goals - and that focussed individuals have goals that can be "operationalized"; the meaning of operationalize **From the cube, 6 things --an awareness of premise or "natural law" (a belief) --many ways to approach the self (see www.maureentabor.com today for breakdown) --networks, social structure, change: these are the sides to come, leading up to building a values cube (future) **From the Blog, if you participate, you learn the value of many-to-many communication. Many to many is one of the three forms. The other two are one-to-many and one-to-one **From the Blog, you can learn how willing people are to help one another out and support: the natural cooperation between individuals
Thank you for your response Dr. Tabor. I in no way feel the class is a drain on my time, I really enjoy coming to school and I was just frustrated because I left my paper last minute and didnt realize I needed to spend more time on it. My goal should've been not to procrastinate so much. Anyways, thank you for offering so much help I really appreciate it. :)
I get the whole concept of the class and am very happy it turned out differently from what I had first imagined. It is helping me focus and remember the basics - so easily forgotten. I didn't "get" the first paper concept until MT wrote the big long piece from her morning pages - then I understood that it was a little more "open" than I had originally thought. I am happy about that because I enjoy writing what I love better than writing about a specific given topic. The LA Riots one I think I understand a bit and am happy we will have a workshop. Paper #2 is still a bit confusing for me ------ I hope we go into it a bit more in class ---- I am sure we will. Thanks MT for this beginning help.
I'm thoroughly enjoying the lectures about the classical theorist that we have been having in class. THEY ARE VERY CLEAR AND UNDERSTANDABLE. The only thing I don't really see the benefit from are the EOS assignments. Maybe If we spent a little more time on the rules in class I think it would be helpful. Even though I got an A on my paper, I still struggle with understanding the grammar rules. I've read the book and I don't have a problem with writing a sociological sentence. However, when it comes to implicating the said rule I have trouble and since we don't really spend time discussing any of them in class I feel lost.
with that said, in all other aspects of the class I am completely satisfied with.
chax: chill! : ) if you got an A on your paper, you are in good standing! and thanks very much for comments above I will find a way to ensure we go over each rule more thoroughly and usefully. Have a nice Wednesday!

oh, and you also learned ASA style - a class I have worked out with Christina over the course of several years.
ReplyDeleteJustMe and others who feel that the class is a drain on their time: please come see me about special arrangements which can be made.
